June 17 Marks Second Busiest Day in MCI History

June 18, 2026

The Kansas City International Airport (MCI) had its second busiest outbound traffic day in its history yesterday, June 17.

With various domestic flights filled with World Cup fans going to their next destination after the Kansas City match and Aerolineas Argentinas flying a charter out of MCI with match attendees, nearly 23,500 people were screened through the security area, just 185 people short of the busiest day of all time, May 18, 2025.

In anticipation of this summer’s increase in visitors, VMD, the Airport’s security screening contractor, staffed extra security personnel to streamline the screening process and ensure travelers were able to get through lines quickly. This resulted in average security screening wait times of 2 to 4 minutes.

“Yesterday’s record-setting passenger traffic, MCI’s busiest Wednesday in its 54-year history, is a testament to the world’s interest in Kansas City,” said Justin Meyer, Deputy Director of Aviation. “The Aviation Department is proud of its strong partnerships that made yesterday’s passenger experience so positive, including airlines who added additional flights, security partners who brought in additional staff, and other vendors who helped Kansas City put its best foot forward.”

This busy traffic day is part of a trend the airport has seen since the start of Summer. May 31 marked the airports busiest Sunday since the Sunday after Thanksgiving last fall, and MCI has continued to see crowds in the days since.

With World Cup Matches scheduled in Kansas City throughout June and July, MCI expects additional busy travel days this summer, and is prepared to continue delivering efficient, seamless and safe airport operations.
