Kansas City International Airport not only draws from a local market base, but the low air fares and variety of carriers bring travelers from markets 200 miles away and beyond. This demand yields more than 11 million passengers per year. Low airport fees yield an industry-low cost per passenger, making it an affordable airport for airlines.

Besides being geographically central, the airport’s immediate catchment area is recognized as containing the mean population center of the entire United States and gross domestic product center of the U.S.
A two-day truck distribution range from KCI captures 83 percent of the nation’s GDP and three days covers both east and west coast markets. Almost no airport but KCI can offer a national distribution fit for the U.S. that achieves proximity to customers and minimum transportation costs.
With the confluence of four interstate highways, a national reputation as a major trucking center and the nation's second largest rail center, Kansas City is nationally acclaimed as an innovator in air cargo and on-airport intermodal real estate development. The city retains a strong position as a vital location for businesses that depend on every mode of cargo shipment.
The airport features a three-runway airfield system that can handle up to 139 aircraft operations per hour, un-congested air and ground space, few delays, no noise restrictions, short taxi time, an expansive cargo-handling infrastructure, onsite Foreign Trade Zone, and Enhanced Enterprise Zone tax initiatives. Couple this with an adjacent interstate highway system and it's no wonder why Kansas City International Airport consistently ranks as one of the best locations for air cargo and distribution development in the U.S.
