Kansas City International Airport and Kansas City Break Passenger Record in June 2024

Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Kansas City itself experienced the busiest month in its history during June 2024. The Kansas City Aviation Department reports that 1,174,626 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International Airport’s gates in June 2024, a 7.4-percent increase from June 2023 and an all-time high for the airport and the month of June. The June total surpassed the 1.14 million record set in July 2001. 2024 is on track to potentially see a record 12 million passengers served at MCI.

Passenger boardings were up 7.3 percent, with 580,586 boarded. Year-to-date passenger boardings are 2,941,715, up 7.5 percent. For the year to date, total passengers in and out total 5,886,496, up 7.6 percent.  

Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at Kansas City International were up 13.3 percent in June with a total of 22.6 million pounds handled. Year to date, 128.2 million pounds of air cargo has been handled, up 9.8 percent. Air freight handled at Kansas City International during June amounted to 22.1 million pounds, up 13.4 percent year-over-year. Year to date, air freight is up 12.0 percent with 126.5 million pounds handled. Air mail for June was up 8.6 percent from June 2023 with 585,698 pounds handled. Air mail year to date for 2024 is down 55.0 percent from 2023 with 1.7 million pounds handled.  

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for June 2024 was 168. Service was offered to 54 nonstop markets. There was an average of 46,588 arriving and departing scheduled seats in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 11 daily departures for June.
