Kansas City Breaks All-Time Passenger Record Again in July
For the second month in a row, Kansas City International Airport (MCI) experienced the busiest month in history during July 2024. The Kansas City Aviation Department reports that 1,175,386 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International Airport’s gates in July 2024, a 4.3-percent increase from July 2023 and an all-time high for the airport and the month. The July total surpassed the 1,174,626 million record set in June 2024 and before that July 2001.
Since the new 40-gate terminal opened in February 2023, the airport has experienced record passenger numbers, and the airlines have added several new domestic and international destinations. Additionally, more than 20 national and local awards have been bestowed upon the facility.
“Breaking an all-time record in passengers in June was amazing enough but breaking that record the very next month in July is incredible,” said Kansas City Director of Aviation Melissa Cooper. “People in the Kansas City region have demonstrated a strong desire to fly, and the airlines and the terminal meet that demand with efficiency. We thank the traveling public and all airport partners for this milestone, and we share this success with them.”
Passenger boardings were up 4.2 percent, with 589,202 boarded. Year-to-date passenger boardings are 3,530,917, up 6.9 percent. For the year to date, total passengers in and out total 7,061,882, up 7.0 percent.
Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at Kansas City International were up 26.6 percent in July with a total of 23.4 million pounds handled. Year to date, 151.6 million pounds of air cargo has been handled, up 12.1 percent. Air freight handled at Kansas City International during July amounted to 22.5 million pounds, up 23.4 percent year-over-year. Year to date, air freight is up 13.6 percent with 149.0 million pounds handled. Air mail for July was up 228.8 percent from July 2023 with 950,410 pounds handled. Air mail year to date for 2024 is down 34.7 percent from 2023 with 2.6 million pounds handled.
The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for July 2024 was 170. Service was offered to 55 nonstop markets. There was an average of 48,328 arriving and departing scheduled seats in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 10 daily departures for July.
