The Kansas City Aviation Department reports that Kansas City International Airport served 11,545,742 total passengers in 2023, up 17.7 percent. The new terminal opened February 28, 2023, so passengers were served in the two old terminals and the new $1.5 billion single terminal during the calendar year.
A total of 923,034 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International’s gates in December, a 16.3-percent increase from December 2022. Passenger boardings were up 18.9 percent, with a total of 465,735 boarded. There were 5,763,983 passenger boardings in 2023, up 18.1 percent.
Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at Kansas City International were down 9.0 percent in December with a total of 22.4 million pounds handled. For 2023, 237.6 million pounds of air cargo was handled, down 8.5 percent. Air freight handled at Kansas City International during December amounted to 22.4 million pounds, down 8.8 percent year-over-year. For the year, air freight was down 9.3 percent with a total of 233.5 million pounds handled. Air mail for December was down 88.1 percent from December 2022 with 10,647 pounds handled. Air mail for 2023 was up 85.0 percent from 2022 with 4.1 million pounds handled.
The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for December 2023 was 149. Service was offered to 47 nonstop markets. There was an average of 41,723 arriving and departing scheduled seats in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 10 daily departures for December.
