Kansas City International Airport has its busiest outbound passenger day of all time

July 13, 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup™ has brought crowds to Kansas City to experience six different matches across four weeks. The influx of travelers has contributed to multiple high-volume days at Kansas City International Airport (MCI), including this previous weekend.

On Sunday, July 12th, MCI had its busiest day of outbound travel traffic of all time, with 24,266 people being screened through security, surpassing the 23,678 who flew out of the Airport on May 18th, 2025.

The days following a match day have consistently made for high traffic days for MCI, with the airport seeing eight different days surpass20,000 travelers screened over the course of the matches in Kansas City, with another busy outbound day expected on Monday, July 13th. MCI came close to breaking the outbound record on Wednesday, May 17th, the day after Argentina’s first match in Kansas City. There were 23,493 passengers screened that day.

“The Kansas City Aviation Department and its partners worked tirelessly in the months leading up to the World Cup arriving in Kansas City to prepare for scenarios like this” said Director of Aviation Melissa Cooper.

“I could not be prouder of Aviation Department staff and our many partner agencies for the work they put in on Sunday and every high-volume day this summer. Our goal as an airport is to provide first class service and that is evident on days like Sunday.”

Security screening gates were opened half an hour earlier than typical, 2:30 am, on Sunday and other previous high outbound days to allow for earlier entrance into the secured area.

VMD, the department’s security screening contractor, as well as the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) had additional staff on hand throughout the day to keep lines flowing through the security checkpoint, including having all sixteen security checkpoints open during peak outbound travel times.

Their efforts kept wait times to an estimated two and a half minutes on average and just five minutes at its longest.

“The Airport is unable to operate without the good work of our screening partners. VMD, TSA and Customs staff did a tremendous job serving visitors from across the globe and ensuring every traveler got in and out of the airport efficiently” added Cooper.

Vantage Group, the Airport Terminal concessionaire, and its partners also coordinated with Aviation Department to have several dining options opened early on Sunday and throughout the tournament to enable travelers to get what they needed before taking off.
